About COVID-19

COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2) is very contagious respiratory disease that spreads quickly and can affect anyone. Symptoms range from mild to very severe. COVID-19 is spread through droplets projected from your mouth or nose when you breathe, cough, sneeze, or speak. Over time, the virus’ genetics change and form genetic lineages – known as variants – just like a family has a family tree. The variants are still COVID-19 but may act differently.

For some people, the virus can be asymptomatic, meaning no physical symptoms but contagious. For most people, symptoms are mild to moderate, requiring isolation at home with rest, fluids, and advice from a medical professional. In some cases, the symptoms are extreme and sometimes life-threatening. Because COVID-19 symptoms are like the flu, RSV, and other viruses, it is important to be tested as soon as symptoms appear.

About RSV

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a common virus that spreads easily by getting droplets from a cough or sneeze in your eyes, nose, or mouth; by touching surfaces (like a doorknob) that has the virus on it then touching your face before washing your hands; or by direct contact with the virus, like kissing the cheek of a child with RSV.

RSV can infect anyone, however, children under the age of 5, adults aged 65+ and people with chronic lung and heart disease have the highest risk for severe illness. Because symptoms are like COVID-19, the flu, and other viruses, it is important to be tested as soon as symptoms arise.

What is a PCR Test?

PCR tests have been used to detect viruses for decades. PCRs are preferred by healthcare professionals because they detect a virus’ genetic materials at the earliest point of infection – even among people who have been exposed to COVID-19, Flu A+B, or RSV but show no symptoms (known as asymptomatic).

Progressive Diagnostics’ PCR test has a sensitivity (true positive rate) of 98% and a specificity (true negative rate) of 99%. Tests are administered at our collection centers throughout Fairfield County with results delivered on the same day.

Progressive Diagnostics offers a variety of PCR test combinations for your convenience. You can test for a specific virus (COVID-19, flu A+B or RSV) or any combination of the three. You need a healthcare professional’s order to have the tests covered by insurance.

  • PCR tests are recommended by healthcare professionals to detect COVID-19 when symptoms begin to appear or if you have been exposed to someone with COVID-19. PCR tests detect the molecular (genetic) presence of the virus.

A PCR test detects COVID-19 earlier than rapid tests, even among people who are asymptomatic.

Rapid tests are over-the-counter tests that detect the antigen protein created by the virus. It is not as sensitive as the PCR test in detecting COVID-19 in its early stages and have therefore been known to produce “false negative” results. Rapid tests are useful to track your recovery process.
